Course Objectives

The qualification covers workers in a range of education and school settings who provide assistance and support in the classroom to facilitate student learning in collaboration with teachers and working with students under broad based supervision. The qualification occupational titles may include: - Teacher Assistant; Education Worker; Tutor; Homeland teaching assistant; Education assistant (special needs); Teacher aid, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education officer

Admission Requirements

Candidates seeking direct entry must have completed a minimum of Year 12 (or equivalent) or be able to demonstrate competency at an appropriate level of skill against each of the five core skills (Learning, Reading, Writing, Oral communication and Numeracy) which will be assessed upon entry.

Course Requirements

To achieve a Diploma in Education Support a total of FOURTEEN (14) units of competency must be completed. This comproses of EIGHT (8) core units of competency and SIX (6) elective units of competency as outlined in the packaging rules. There are no course requirements for this qualification

Work with diverse people

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work respectfully with people from diverse social and cultural groups and situations, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. This unit applies to all workers. The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

Develop and facilitate culturally competent and collaborative education teams in schools

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to lead and develop culturally competent and collaborative education teams who work together to achieve shared goals in an education setting. This unit also addresses the analysis and application of theories of culture, cultural competence, collaboration and interpersonal and intercultural communication. In practice, developing and facilitating culturally competent and collaborative education teams occurs in the context of other generalist or specialist work activities.

Lead and develop others in a community sector

This unit describes the knowledge and skills required to achieve identified work outcomes through managing, leading and developing individuals and teams in the work group or organisation.

Identify and respond to children and young people at risk

Code - CHCPRT001 Contact Hours - 40
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to support and protect children and young people who are at risk of harm. This work occurs within legislative and policy frameworks and carries a duty of care responsibility. This unit applies to workers in a range of job roles providing services to children and young people including in community services and health contexts.

Manage legal and ethical compliance

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to research information about compliance and ethical practice responsibilities, and then develop and monitor policies and procedures to meet those responsibilities.

Identify and respond to student development needs

Support the development of literacy skills

This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required by education support workers to provide high level support to students and teachers in all aspects of literacy including the ability to develop resources that will reinforce literacy skills across the curriculum

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to evaluate and enhance own practice through a process of reflection and ongoing professional development. This unit applies to workers in all industry sectors who take pro-active responsibility for their own professional development.

Foster the holistic development and wellbeing of the child in school age care

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to foster and enhance the holistic development and wellbeing of children from 5 to 12 years of age. Actual nominal hours are 240.

Assist in implementing education plans for students with disabilities

This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required by education support workers to contribute to and implement individual education plans for students with disabilities

Research an education issue

This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required by education support workers to carry out research activities, analyse collected data and produce reports

Support students' mathematics learning

Code - CHCEDS019 Contact Hours - 45
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required by education support workers to work with teachers to support students in pre-primary, primary and secondary to develop mathematics skills in number and algebra, measurements and geometry, and statistics and probability as included in current curriculum documents. The unit provides skills and knowledge to enable education support workers to work with the teacher to develop resources to reinforce mathematics skills for across the curriculum and to support students in their development of skills. This unit applies to education support work in a variety of contexts and the work is to be undertaken with appropriate guidance, support and supervision by a nominated teacher or other education professional. Support learning and implementation of responsible behaviour

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to assist the individual and education organisation to implement responsible behaviour plans. The unit develops an understanding of relevant legislation and organisation policies. This unit applies to education support work in a variety of contexts and work is to be undertaken with appropriate guidance, support and supervision by a nominated teacher or other education professional. Use educational strategies to support Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander education

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to support, contribute to and coordinate education opportunities for students, including those from Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander backgrounds. This unit applies to work undertaken with appropriate guidance, support and supervision by a nominated teacher or other education professional. It addresses inclusion of community members in school activities, demonstration that everyone is valued in day-to-day interactions and support for students’ development of their self-concept. Communicate effectively in the workplace using complex spoken and written text

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to communicate effectively in the workplace using a range of complex written and spoken workplace texts. This unit also addresses the analysis and application of socio-cultural and socio-linguistic theories of language.

Lead a team to develop and implement Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language and culture programs

Code - EPWCUL610A Contact Hours - 100
This unit describes the outcomes required to lead an education team to develop, implement and maintain Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language and culture programs in education settings. This involves facilitating school and community engagement to develop, evaluate and maintain the program; leading the education team to plan, teach, evaluate and assess learning sequences; and coordinating and facilitating mentoring and coaching within the team. Maintain and protect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to work with communities to develop, implement and evaluate strategies for maintaining, reclaiming, reviving and protecting Indigenous Australian languages at local, regional and national levels. The unit has been developed and written in the context of Indigenous Australians maintaining control of their cultural heritage and directing if and how this heritage may be passed on and assessed.
